A recent change by the Internal Revenue Service in regard to tax deductions related to conservation easements has presented some new challenges for entities involved in these types of transactions.
Ronald Levitt, shareholder at the law firm of Sirote & Permutt, P.C. will headline the Alabama chapter of the Realtor Land Institute during its Spring Conference April 20-21 at Lake Guntersville State Park.
The two-day event will kick off at 1 p.m. on April 20 with a presentation by Kath Donaldson, “Alabama Bass Trail Seminar.”
Mugs Mullins, 2017 President of the Alabama Association of Realtors, will address the group after Donaldson.
“This year, we’re making a big push to try to get our people more involved with AAR,” said Fletcher Majors of Great Southern Land Co. “We’ve got Mugs Mullins, who is the AAR President this year to speak to us about some of the stuff AAR does for the land guys that we may not even know about.”
Majors said there are multiple benefits that come with AAR membership, particularly the organization’s work in Montgomery this time of the year.
“One of the biggest ones is watching what goes through that legislature,” Majors said. “I served for a couple of years on the Bill Read Committee, which looks at every bill coming through the legislature, and Mugs was chairman of that last year.”
Majors will also lead a panel discussion that will include information on using social media and marketing in the land business, as well as timberland pricing, land agents and auctioneers working together and land photography.
Levitt will take the stage at 9 a.m. on April 21. This portion of the event is approved for three hours of continuing education credits.
Levitt will discuss the IRS’ new rule and what land practitioners need to know when it comes to conservation easements.
“We’re going to let (Levitt) talk about what the IRS is doing and what you need to do in those and what conservation easements look like going forward,” Majors said.
